Kosher symbols explained.. (GUIDE)

Products that have been certified as kosher are labeled with kosher symbols. Kosher symbols are registered trademarks of kosher certification organizations, and cannot be placed on a food label without the organization's permission.

Kosher, HALAL and American Law

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."

In the U.S., there can be no legal definition of kosher or halal, therefore, no legal mechanisms to regulate the standards used by food manufacturers. Legally, manufacturers can use either word on product labeling. They can call their products 'kosher' or 'halal' simply if they believe that their food meets these standards. This practice of labeling a food or ingredient like gelatin as 'kosher' is effective in attracting a significant portion of the "kosher consumer" most of whom are Muslims.

Read more about U.S. Laws concerning halal and kosher foods here.

'K': Stay away

A single 'K' is sometimes used as a symbol for kosher, but as a letter, it cannot be trademarked (the method by which other symbols are protected from misuse). In many countries, it only indicates that the company producing the food claims it is kosher. 'K' is often used by manufacturers to attract kosher consumers when the product cannot be certified by a rabbinical certification agency.

Guide to Kosher Food Symbols

Different kosher certifying agencies tend to follow different kosher certification standards, some more strict and others more lenient. This is because in interpreting ancient dietary laws and adapting them to modern technology, different rabbis have different views about what exactly passes as kosher.

This guide identifies the kosher certifying agencies behind the most commonly used kosher symbols in the United States, Europe and Asia. More information about each agency, and the kosher standards it maintains, can be found on each agency's web site.

Tropicana Pure Premium drinks, Orange Juice Halal or Haram?

This refers only to Tropicana Pure Premium drinks which can be found on this page

To make matters clear - some of their flavors contain cochineal/carmine, the insect coloring

Their orange juices containing Omega - 3 contains fish oil and fish gelatin which is permissible for us, alhamdulillah.

XYZ:

We'd be delighted to answer your questions about Tropicana Orange Juice.

With regards to animal derived ingredients being included, most of Tropicana's juice products are vegetarian/vegan. There are a few juices which contain cochineal/carmine (which will be listed in the ingredients if contained in a product) and Tropicana Healthy Heart Orange Juice containing Omega-3.

We began listing carmine, a natural color, several years ago on the ingredient labels of those juices containing this ingredient. Primarily, carmine is used in our non-refrigerated juices. However, Tropicana's packaging is clearly labeled and complies with current government regulations.

The source of Omega-3's used in Tropicana Healthy Heart Orange Juice is called MEG-3 (fish oil and fish gelatin). It contains tilapia, sardine and anchovy.

We hope this information is helpful, Lazeena. Thank you for your business and interest in our products.

Gatorade Halal / Haram??

Gatorade

Believe it or not, just the other day I heard people condemning others for drinking Gatorade. Why? They told them it contained HORMONES! hahahaha

Okay this beverage contains electrolytes and vitamins, geared to refuel the body and keep you properly hydrated. This is why when we're sick, sometimes the doctor may tell us to drink Gatorade to add extra vitamins and minerals into our body. There are some added things in Gatorade which cannot be found in water.

So nooo, there are no hormones in Gatorade! But to set the record straight for people who follow rumors:

XYZ:

You will be glad to know that there are no animal derived ingredients in any of the varieties of Gatorade Thirst Quencher, Gatorade Endurance Formula, Propel Fit Water or the Gatorade Energy Drink.

Skippy Peanut Butter Halal or haram?

Skippy says that when buying their peanut butters, to look out for the following ingredients as they may come from animal sources:

  • Meat
  • Fat
  • Extract
Yes... very vague and I doubt they would be exactly listed as such on the label. The person who replied back didn't seem that friendly. In the question I sent I just mentioned that I was Muslim and that I follow a certain diet (due to religious laws) and they responded weirdly to it... or maybe it's just me!

Hi XYZ,

Our products are formulated for use by the majority of consumers and not specifically for those on restricted diets.

Ingredients derived from animal origins may be listed as meat, fat and extract (e.g., chicken, beef or natural flavors).

Changes in existing products can occur without notification. We suggest reading all ingredient labels carefully.

Hope this information is helpful!

Haagen Dazs Ice Cream halal / Haram?

Haagen Dazs Ice Cream

The only Haagen Dazs ice cream which are not permissible to eat, are any with marshmallows, also Bailey's Irish Cream and Rum Raisin contain alcohol.

Here is the email that was sent to me:

Dear XYZ,

Thank you for your email requesting nutritional information on HÄAGEN-DAZS® Ice Cream. In an increasingly health-conscious society, I am always pleased to respond to our consumers' questions regarding our products.

Milk and egg are animal derived. However, aside from the gelatin in the marshmallows and marshmallow variegates, we have no other ingredients which are animal derived. Please be advised, there may also be eggs in some inclusions, like cookie dough.

HÄAGEN-DAZS® Bailey's ® Irish Cream contains a small amount of alcohol as a flavor -- approximately 0.5% weight of alcohol per serving. The amount of alcohol in the Rum Raisin is less than 1 gram per serving

We hope that this information is useful to you and we appreciate your taking the time to contact our company to share your concerns.

Lipton's Soups halal / haram??

Lipton's Soups

A red flag with this brand, which will now queue us to be more careful with other brands is that in their soups they may list NATURAL FLAVORS in the ingredients section, which can be derived from animals. So the next time you see NATURAL FLAVORS on anything you buy... be wary...

Hello ,

Thanks for writing!

Most of our soups contain meat, meat derivatives, or dairy products.

Here are some exceptions :

MEAT, DAIRY & EGG FREE:

RECIPE SECRETS:

- Onion

- Onion Mushroom

- Vegetable

MEAT FREE, WITH DAIRY AND/OR EGGS:

CUP-A-SOUP:

- Broccoli & Cheese

- Cream of Mushroom

- Spring Vegetable

- Tomato

Ingredients of animal origin may be listed as meat (e.g., chicken or beef), fat (as in chicken fat), extract (such as beef extract, broth, or natural flavors).

But, we checked with our brand management, and they informed us that the natural flavors may or may not be derived from animal origin. There are many mixtures that we purchase from hundreds of flavor suppliers. If you are uncomfortable about the natural flavorings used they recommend that you do not use the product as we cannot guarantee that it is not of animal origin.
We hope this information is helpful.

Kind regards

Pig Enzymes in bread

Last Updated: 31/05/2009

In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.

A key point here is that the Paper does not reference any hard evidence for the claims made. Many a time, pressure groups, or organisations "scaremonger" the public to adopt the views and beliefs of their respective ideoligies, or indeed to sell their own products to further their aims.

We have received a reply from the following major bakers in the UK, from which we conclude that they contain no animal enzymes.

As we receive correspondence from Bakers, we will upload the information Insha-Allah Ta'ala.

REd bull contains cocaine?? (NOT!)

Statement Red Bull Deutschland GmbH
May 25th, 2009, 2:30 pm

German authorities have raised concerns regarding Red Bull Cola due to the use of a decocainized coca leaf extract in the product.

Decocainized coca leaf extracts are used as flavouring in foodstuffs around the world and are considered to be safe (e.g. FDA Gras Status, Council of Europe). Red Bull Cola and other foodstuff containing such extracts may therefore be sold legally.

The assessment commissioned by Red Bull from the Austrian Belan Institute was unable to detect any trace of cocaine, and consequently clearly contradicts the assessment furnished by the LIGA (North Rhine Westphalia Institute for Health and Labor).

To clear up any concerns, we met today (Monday) with the relevant local authority, the Bavarian Ministry for Environment, Health, and Consumer Protection. Based on this meeting, the Ministry has decided to officially investigate the existing examination results. We are sure that we will be able to clear up the facts very soon.

Loreal Lipsticks Halal or Haram??

Following statement sent from L'Oreal in feb 2009:

Thank you for your recent email,

In regards to animal derived ingredients in our products:
Some of our products may contain derivatives of sheep's wool (LANOLIN - though no animal is sacrificed to obtain this) and some of our products also contain beeswax, honey or silk amino acids, fish products (collagen and oil) and fowl products (eggs and feather keratin). These can all be identified in the ingredients lists on each product. Some of our lipsticks however may contain carmine, which gives it it's red colour from carminic acid which is derived from insects. L'Oréal actively monitors all issues that could lead to questions concerning the safety of its products and the ingredients used in their manufacture. The ingredients are always strictly selected in observance of the legislations in effect, and are safe for consumers based on the most recent scientific knowledge.

With regards to the above information GMWA website had the following remarks..

Last Updated: 14/04/2009

In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Carmine in lipsticks is not permissible.

The use of carmine in lipsticks, more commonly known as C.I. 75470 in the cosmetic industry is impermissible. This is because there is the risk of licking the lips or somehow swallowing the carmine.

"Carmine (IPA: /ˈkɑːmɪn, ˈkɑrmaɪn, -miːn/), also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470, or E120, is a pigment of a bright red color obtained from the carminic acid produced by some scale insects, such as the cochineal and the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularly deep red color. Carmine is used in the manufacture of artificial flowers, paints, rouge, yogurt, cosmetics, food additives, and crimson ink."

Fuze Drinks Halal / Haram?

FUZE HEALTHY INFUSIONS

FUZE Healthy Infusions brand of drinks are distributed through coca cola in Canada...

Fuze is available in these following flavors (maybe not all of these are available in Canada)

Fuze Banana Strawberry, Banana Vanilla, Fuze Blackberry, Fuze Blackberry Blueberry Grape, Fuze Blackberry Raspberry, Fuze Cranberry Raspberry, Fuze Dragon fruit, Fuze Fruit Punch, Fuze Mango Orange, Fuze Melon Strawberry, Fuze Peach Mango, Fuze Strawberry, Fuze Tangerine and Fuze Tropical Fruit Punch.

HALAL / HARAM??
I have called the number listed on the product label for Fuze drinks (1-800-208-2653). The customer service rep checked and informed me that the only animal based product used in these drinks (some of them) is milk. The drink I was asking in particular about was "Fuze refresh Banana Colada".

The rep on further inquiry informed that the rest (other then banana colada) of the drinks dont contain any other animal products either and that there is no alcohol being used.

If anyone else has any other information to add to this (or any other post) don't hesitate to comment on this post.

Oreo Cookies Halal? (email UPDATE)

IsItHaram.com

to me
show details 9:42 PM (16 hours ago)

We saw that someone had posted a comment on your blog, in response to your reposting of a portion of SPOTLIGHT HALAL: OREO COOKIES. "Anonymous" said that Lowfat Oreos were 'haram'. We believe that his comment is because low-fat Oreos in the U.S. contain glycerin. Glycerin allows Oreos to reduce the fat content of the cookie, while maintaining the 'fat feel' on the eater's tongue.

We looked into it further, and found that the Reduced Fat version of Oreos are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union, which means that the glycerin is not pork-derived. In addition, currently, glycerin is allowed in food imported into Saudi Arabia.

Hope this helps.

The article is highly dramatised, but unfortunAtely does not back up any of the claims. We regard this email as vastly heresay and folklore, unless otherwise backed up with hard facts.

If you receive this pig fat E-mail, please do not forward it onto others, as it just dupes more and more people, and it does its rounds.

Muslims should NOT be "fast-forwarders", but think about what they are relaying to others, and whether it holds any merit.

NEW INFORMATION ON YEAST EXTRACT AND TORULA YEAST

MCG recently investegated the Yeast Extract, Torula Yeast products from some manufacturer and distributor in USA and findout the current source of Yeast Extract and Torula Yeast. According to yeast manufacturer:

1. Yeast Extract or Autolyzed Yeast Extract from by product of beer making:

The only two categories of food products which use the yeast extract or autolyzed yeast extract are Cheese Crackers and Cheese products because of its harsh and bitter taste. The type of yeast is Brewer Yeast.

2. Yeast Extract or Autolyzed Yeast Extract from Baker's Yeast:

Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast or Baker's Yeast(Halal) is used in manufacture of yeast extract or autolyzed yeast or extract in food products other than cheese crackers or cheeses such as soups, fruits, and other foods etc. So if you see Yeast Extract or Autolyzed Yeast or extract in food products other than cheese crackers and chees, it means the Yeast Extract or Autolyzed Yeast or Extract is from Baker's yeast and it is Halal.

3. Torula Yeast:

According to manufacturer currently the Torula Yeast is manufactured from sugar source such as Molasses or corn by many manufacturer. They stop manufacturing Torula yeast from alcohol or waste paper.

4.Inactive Yeast:

Yeast cells are pasteurized to inactive them. Mostly from Baker's yeast which is a Halal yeast.

Altoids© Mints

WHAT IS IT?

Altoids are a popular brand of breath mints marketed under the slogan "The Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Mints." Though the brand is owned by Wrigley, the confections have been manufactured and produced by Callard & Bowser-Suchard in Wales, the United Kingdom, since the early 1800's.[1]

Altoids mints are much stronger than typical mints; the secret of their strength lies in the use of real peppermint oil in the recipe. Because of this strong mintiness, Altoids are often chosen as a breath freshener as well as an after-coffee mint. Altoids mints are currently available in eight flavors: peppermint, wintergreen, spearmint, cinnamon, ginger, liquorice, chocolate, and crème de menthe.

HOW IS IT MADE?
All Altoid mints, including Chocolate-Covered Altoids contain: SUGAR, GUM ARABIC, ARTIFICIAL OR NATURAL FLAVOR (OIL OF PEPPERMINT), and GELATIN.[2] Chocolate-Covered Altoids contain CONFECTIONER'S GLAZE, another name for shellac which is made from crushed and processed insect cocoons.[3] Shellac is used as a glaze on food and medicine to provide a shiny coating.

Altoid Sours, Altoid Gum, and Altoid Mini products do not contain gelatin or shellac.

Due to the presence of shellac and gelatin(most likely from pork) it is very highly recommended to avoid these products or atleast research before you consume these..

RECIPE: Halal Chicken Marsala

This is our halal twist on The Olive Garden's Chicken Marsala recipe. Instead of red wine, it uses pomegranate syrup (دبس رمان) to add flavor and body.

INGREDIENTS

4 chicken breasts, boneless & skinless
½ cup flour
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tbsp dried oregano
4 tbsp (¼ cup) olive oil
4 tbsp (¼ cup) butter
2 large sweet Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
2 cups fresh mushrooms, washed and sliced
1/3 cup pomegranate syrup,
or, 1 cup unsweetened pomegranate juice
Water, as needed

DIRECTIONS

1. WASH chicken breasts in mixture of water and vinegar then pat dry using a paper towel.

2. POUND chicken breasts between sheets of plastic wrap until about 1/2" (1 cm.) thick.

3. COMBINE flour, salt, pepper and oregano in a mixing bowl or ziploc bag. Coat chicken pieces
in the flour, shaking off any excess.

4. HEAT oil and butter together in a skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken breasts on
medium heat for about 2 minutes on the first side, until lightly browned. Turn breasts over
to cook other side. Cook breasts about 2 more minutes, until both sides are lightly browned,
but not cooked through.

5. REMOVE chicken and set aside.

6. ADD onions and mushrooms to pan, stirring occassionally until onions turn transparent. Add
pomegranate syrup and stir. Then place the chicken breasts back in the pan, coating with
the onion mushroom sauce.

7. COVER, lower heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Add water, in small amounts, as
needed to keep from burning.

8. TRANSFER to serving plate.

9. SERVE with potatos or pasta.

The Islamic Laws of Animal Slaughter

By Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani [Bio]
Translated by Amir A. Toft

Product Details
No. of Pages: 160
Format: Softcover
Dimensions: 5.5" x 8.5"
ISBN: 1-933764-01-5
Pub. Date: May 2006

There is a growing sense of concern today among consumers, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, about the healthfulness of what they eat. Health food stores have gained a prominent status in the US, and many consumers review every last ingredient listed in a food item’s nutritional facts list to ensure that they meet their dietary standards. Muslims must be even more conscientious of what they consume, as a Muslim’s diet must, above all, be lawful (halal) under Islamic law, as well as wholesome (tayyib). The Qur’an states, “O people, eat from whatever is upon the earth that is lawful and wholesome” (2:168).

Of all types of food, one that has become the cause of controversy among Muslims the world over is slaughtered meat. Muslim sources without the guidance of scholars have spread inaccurate information about Islam’s rules and regulations for animal slaughter, leaving Muslims confused about the facts. Authored by a Muslim scholar recognized worldwide for his mastery of Islamic jurisprudence, The Islamic Laws of Animal Slaughter clears up the confusion. The author presents a brief, structured analysis of Islam’s laws for animal slaughter, as well an overview of their practical application in the modern world. A couple of articles, appended specially for this translation, round off the discussion by addressing matters particularly relevant to Muslims in the US and other Western nations.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“An engaging, enlightening, and intellectually thought-provoking work that reassures Muslims that it is still possible to consume Halal and pure sustenance in this extremely complex world.” —Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC), UK

“Mufti Usmani has given a scholarly explanation of the ritual laws of animal slaughter, which every Muslim, particularly those living in the West, must be acquainted with in order to practice their din correctly.” —Mohammad Mazhar Hussaini, Director of Halal Program, Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)

“The first English work on this subject that treats modern concerns and is yet thorough, scholarly, authentic, and accessible to a general audience.” —South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA)

“By far the best work on the subject available to the English-speaking reader.” —Dr. Muhammad Munir Chaudry,
Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA)

“A must read for any Muslim who wishes to consume the permissible and steer clear of the forbidden, based on the teachings of Allah and His beloved Messenger (upon him be peace).” —Halal Monitoring Authority (HMA), Canadian Council of Muslim Theologians

Translation undertaken by permission and authorization of the author.

Diet of a muslim (Very important!)

The diet of a muslim is unquestionably one of the most important matters that Islamic law addresses. The stern, unequivocal command of Allah az o wa jal and His messenger |Sal laho alaihe wa sal'lam| to eat what is lawful (Halal) show why this is so. In one verse of the Qur'an, Allah subhana wa ta'ala says, "O people, eat from whatever is upon the earth that is lawful and wholesome" (Qur'an 2:168).

In a rigorously authenticated (sahih) hadith. Abu Hurayra |RadiAllaho unho| relates,

The messenger of Allah |Sal lal laho alaihe wasl'lam said 'O people! indeed Allah is pure; He does not accept anything but what is pure. And Allah has commanded of the believers what he has commanded of the messengers. He says, "O messengers, eat of what is wholesome and do righteous deeds. Indeed, I am all-knowing of what you do" (Qur'an 23:51). And he says, "O you who belive, eat of the wholesome things that We have provided you" (Qur'an :172). He then related the story of a person who has traveled a long way [for some righteous purpose], and whose clothes have becomme tattered and dirtied. He extends his hands to the heavens, sayin, ' O my Lord! O my Lord!' But what he has eatin is unlawful (haram), and what he has drunk is unlawful, and what he wears is unlawful, and he has been nourished with what is unlawful -- So how can he be answered?" (Sahih Muslim)
By putting in the any food or drink that Allah, the Creator of the Worlds, has deemed unlawful and impure, our bodies become reservoirs for impurity. Just as a Muslim's prayer is unacceptable if he or she is in a state of outward physical impurity, how can our prayers or our supplications or any of our other acts of worship deserve to be accepted if we offer them while impurity runs through the veins of our bodies?

Therefore, from both a practical and, more importantly, from a textual perspective, there is no question that we as Muslims have a solemn religious duty to learn the laws of Islam regarding lawful food and drink and make every effort to adhere to them.

Alcohol in deodorant / Perfume haram or halal?

Bismiha-Ta'ala
The general rule on the use of alcohol based perfumes/deodrants, etc is that if the alcohol has been extracted from grapes or dates their use will be forbidden since this is Najis (impure) and will thus make the body and clothes impure.

If the deodrants/perfume is made from synthetic/chemical alcohol, extracted and manufactured from items besides grapes or dates, then the use of such products is permissible.

Hazrat Mufti M. Taqi Usmani Saheb, (A leading contemporary scholar of Pakistan) writes in his commentary of Sahih Muslim, "The majority of alcohol used in medication and perfumes is not manufactured from grapes and dates, it is extracted from grains, peels or petroleum etc." (Takmilah Fathul-Mulhim Vol. 3 Page. 608)

Before using such products, it is advisable from the Shar'ee point of view to check with the manufacturers on the type of alcohol used. (i.e. whether natural or synthetic based).

Allah SWT Knows Best.

Glycerin why is it haram?? (or not..)

WHAT IS GLYCERIN? CHEMISTRY & REGULATORY INFORMATION
Glycerine is a clear, thick, slippery substance used as a thickener, low-calorie sweetener, and emulsifier in foods and medications as well as an humectant (moisturizer) in health and beauty products. The source of glycerine may be animal fat, vegetable oil or the toxic petro-chemical epichlorohydrin. The processes used to produce glycerine may be either saponification (soap-making), or transesterification (the catalytic reaction of an oil with an alcohol [methanol or ethanol]).

Until recently, much of the world's glycerine was produced from the chemical 'epichlorohydrin' which is derived from petroleum (crude oil), not from animals. Today, however, most of the world's glycerin is produced as a by-product of biodiesel fuel production. The production of bio diesel entails collecting large amounts of animal and vegetable fat waste from restaurants and putting it through the transesterification process. Glycerin is a 10% waste-product of the bio diesel production process. Large scale production of biodiesel, especially in the European Union, has led to an excess of crude glycerin in the market, making the epichlorohydrin process no longer economical.[4]

The current published food import regulations of the countries of Qatar[5] and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia[6] permit glycerin in food products imported into their countries. It is uncertain as to whether these regulations will be reviewed or modified, given the recent shift away from petro-chemical sources and towards restaurant waste fats, the raw form of which contain some degree of pig fat.

AMNA RECOMMENDS

It is very possible that recent changes to glycerine production methods may impact its allowability in foods imported into Saudi Arabia and Qatar. For this reason, AMNA places glycerin into the "doubtful" category.

Oreo Cookies Halal? (Updated)

Spotlight Halal: Oreo™ Cookies

WHAT IS IT?
Oreos™ are brand of snack cookies produced by Nabisco. The classic Oreo is made of two rich, near black chocolate wafers separated by a white creamy filling. They are the best-selling cookie in the U.S. In fact, over 362 billion Oreos have been sold since the cookie was first introduced in 1912, making it the best selling cookie of the 20th century. For the first 85 years of their manufacture, Oreo™ Cookies were made with animal fat.

oreos

The rich chocolate flavor of Oreos is so popular that it is found in recipes for milkshakes, cheesecakes, ice cream sundaes, pie crusts, pudding, breakfast bars, cakes and all types of chocolaty sweets.

Join our FB Group

HOW IS IT MADE?
For the first 85 years of its manufacture, Oreos were made with animal fat. That started changing in the late 1980's and early 1990's when Nabisco began reformulating its recipe to use vegetable shortening.

In the year 1998, Oreo cookies in the U.S. became certified as not containing fat from pigs or other animals. Oreos are made with the artificial flavoring 'vanillin' and not with 'vanilla extract.' Vanilla extract contains alcohol (ethanol) which counters Islamic dietary requirements. Vegetable shortening and vanillin are used in all varieties of Oreo cookies.

Oreos contain: Sugar, Flour, Vegetable Oil, Cocoa Powder, Corn Syrup, Baking Soda, Cornstarch, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Vanillin and Chocolate.

WARNING LEVEL: NONE

This issue of "Spotlight Halal" was written upon the request of a reader who asked us to research Oreo cookies -- and for good reason.

Shellac = Insect candies yummy....

Spotlight Halal: Shellac Pharmaceutical Glaze (Beetlejuice, E904)

Shellac, used as a coating on aspirin and candies alike, is made from crushed insect cocoons.
Yummy.....

shrimp scampi
Left: Cocoons and larvae of the lac bug.
Right: Mature lac bug

WHAT IS IT?
Shellac is a resinous compound secreted by the female lac bug (also known as: kerria lacca, laccifer lacca, carteria lacca and tachardia lacca) to form its cocoon. Shellac is used as a coating on medicines and candies.

Shellac ranges in color from very light blond to very dark brown, with all shades of brown and yellow and orange and red in between. The color is influenced by the sap of the tree the lac bug is living on, as well as the time of harvest.

Because it is contains crushed insects, another name for shellac is beetlejuice. However, because of the negative connotation associated with these names, on drug and nutritional supplement (vitamin) product labeling, shellac may be generically referred to as either enteric coating, pharmaceutical glaze, confectioner's glaze, resinous glaze, pure food glaze or natural glaze. In the European Union, shellac is known by the E Number E904.

facebook logo

HOW IS IT MADE?

Shellac is scraped from the bark of the trees where the female lac bug deposits it to provide a sticky hold on the trunk. In the process of harvesting shellac, the insect may be crushed into the shellac resin.

Raw shellac, which contains bark shavings and lac bug parts, is heated over a fire causing it to liquify. The thick sticky shellac is then dried into flat sheets, broken up into flakes, bagged and sold. Flakes are dissolved in denatured alcohol to make liquid shellac.

It takes about 100,000 lac bugs to make 1 lb. of shellac flakes.

IN WHAT PRODUCTS IS THIS INGREDIENT FOUND?

Although commonly thought of as a wood stain and protectant, shellac is also used as a glazing agent on pills and candies. Glazing agents are food additives that provide a shiny appearance and protective coating to foods guarding against unwanted changes to color, smell, or appearance.

Skittles® candies sold in the UK (United Kingdom) contain shellac as a glazing agent. [Skittles® sold in the U.S. do not contain shellac, but do contain gelatin. In both countries, certain flavors contain the red food coloring cochineal (carmine, E120), derived from the crushed shells of the insect of the same name.] Shellac is sometimes used to replace the natural wax on apples which is removed during the cleaning process. In the pharmaceutical industry, shellac is used as an enteric coating on time-release medications, allowing the medicine to be absorbed in the intestinal tract, instead of in the stomach. It is used on safety coated aspirin products to prevent stomach irritation.

WARNING LEVEL: HIGH

Many of us don’t give it a second thought when we buy medicine for ourselves or for our children. A recent trip to the pharmacy drove home what a minefield the pharmacy is for the Muslim consumer. While shopping for supplements, we found that out of 30 products we found only ONE that neither contained alcohol (ethanol, ethyl alcohol), shellac nor gelatin.

AMNA RECOMMENDS

Read the Inactive Ingredients panel on drug and nutritional supplement product packaging, where the FDA requires shellac, alcohol and gelatin to be listed. Instead, choose medications and vitamin supplements made with the following vegetarian ingredients:

  • Carnauba Wax, a natural wax coating derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree of Brazil.
  • Cellulose-derived pharmaceutical coatings such as ethyl cellulose (E462), hypromellose (INN), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC, E464), all derived from the cell walls of green plants.
  • Vegetarian pharmaceutical thickeners and binders such as: methyl cellulose (or methylcellulose); hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC, E463); carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, E466); cellulose acetate; microcrystalline cellulose (E460i), and powdered cellulose (E460ii).

Spotlight Halal is a newsletter and article series providing North American Muslims with practical information about food choices. Weekly, we tackle a problem food such as Clam Chowder, Lobster Bisque or Teriyaki Sauce. Spotlight Halal is published by the creators of IsItHaram.com and AMNA Muslim Food Advisor, a service rating more than 3,000 foods according to their likelihood of containing haram substances such as alcohol, pork, blood, vermin, toxins and the meats of predatory animals and donkey.

This is for all those "Halal is inhumane" idiots...

Halal is the perfect way for animal slaughter (Otherwise stick to your veggies)

These are excerpts taken from a study by Wilhelm Schultze and Dr. Hazim at the School of veterinary Medicine, Hanover University, Germany published early June 1977 to test out which is more humane.. the Muslim Halal way or the western captive bolt stunning...

The link for the full article is on the bottom this is just part of the findings of the study.. and some the conclusions... (don't buy into the "halal is inhumane" B.S)

HALAL vs Captive Bolt Stunning Report

Experiments for measuring the heart frequency and brain activity during slaughter conditions were carried out on 23 sheep and 15 calves. After implanting permanent electrodes into the Os frontale the cerebral cortex impulses were measured for 17 sheep and 10 calves during ritual slaughter and for 6 sheep and 5 calves during captive bolt application with subsequent bloodletting. Some sheep were additionally subjected to thermal pain stimuli after the ritual cut.

The investigations had the following results:

Slaughter by ritual cut (the halal humane way):

1. After the bloodletting cut the EEG initially is the same as the EEG before the cut (NO PAIN!). There is a high probability that the loss of reaction took place within 4 – 6 seconds for sheep and within 10 seconds for calves. (no pain and very quick death)

2. The zero line in the EEG was recorded no later than after 13 seconds for 17 sheep and no later than 23 seconds for 7 calves.

3. Thermal pain stimuli did not cause an increase in activity. (Even if you inflict pain externally it does not affect the animal anymore)

4. After the cut the heart frequency rose for calves within 40 seconds to 240 heart actions per minute and for sheep within 40 seconds to 280 heart actions per minute. (more heart beats = more bloodletting = cleaner / safer / tastier meat..)

In summary the following conclusions are possible:

Calves (Ritual / islamic cut)

After the bloodletting cut loss of reaction (loss of consciousness) occurred with high probability within 10 seconds. A clear reaction to the cut could not be detected in any animal. For 7 animals a zero EEG was recorded no later than after 23 seconds. Cramps occurred in the animals regularly only after the brain currents had stopped.

Sheep

After the bloodletting cut loss of reaction (loss of consciousness) occurred after 10 seconds the latest. A clear reaction to the cut could not be detected in any animal. The zero line was recorded no later than 14 seconds after the cut. Cramps only occurred after the zero line had been detected and were much shorter than after captive bolt stunning.

The slaughter in the form of ritual cut is, if carried out properly, painless in sheep and calves according to the EEG recordings and the missing defensive actions.

Slaughter after captive bolt application: (Inhumane western way)

1. After captive bolt stunning all animals displayed most severe general disturbances (waves of 1-2 Hz) in the EEG, which almost with certainty eliminates a sense of pain. (MORE PAINFUL!!)

2. The zero line in the EEG was reached for 4 calves after 28 seconds. (Painful elongated death)

3. For two sheep the cerebral cortex activity only stopped in one half of the brain, whilst it continued in the other in the –region (up to 3.5 Hz) until the bloodletting cut. (oouch!!)

4. The bloodletting cut resulted for all animals in a brain activity (e and d waves). (Extra pain!)

5. Thermal pain stimuli caused an increase in activity in one sheep.

6. The heart frequency rose directly after stunning to values above 300 actions per minute.

In summary the following conclusions are possible:

Calves (Inhumane western way)

After captive bolt stunning most severe general disturbances (waves of 1-2 Hz) occurred in the EEG, which almost with certainty eliminates a sense of pain.

Sheep (Inhumane western way)

Similar disturbances were also seen in sheep, but besides the somewhat higher frequency there are still clearly superimposed waves. For one animal waves could be recorded after pain stimuli until after the 200th second. Apparent cramps were registered for all sheep with the exception of one animal.

Halal subway celeberates first birthday...

Halal Subway celebrates 1st birthday

9/ 1/2009

A SUBWAY store, which went halal a year ago, says business couldn’t be better after a 20 per cent increase in sales.

The store based at Texaco on Manchester Road, Hollinwood is even accredited by the Islamic Foundation of Ireland where the halal meat comes from.

Store Owner Mike Williams said they took the decision to turn their subway store halal very seriously by serving exclusively halal meats and banning pork products in line with Muslim dietary rules

This also meant disposing some kitchen equipment including cutlery, knives, containers, chopping boards and replacing them with new ones.

Staff even had to get new sets of uniforms.

The store was closed for a week before re-opening as halal.

Said Mike: "That was a year ago and I'm really glad we made the decision to go halal.

"Given the demographics of the area where we had a large number of Asian clients I thought it was necessary to cater for everybody’s needs and reflect the community we serve.

"In the beginning our Muslim clients didn’t have much on offer preferring tuna or vegetable on their sandwiches but as soon as halal meat was introduced, the whole menu was avaialble to them. One of the favourites now is meatball sub - which previously wouldn't have been allowed.

"To replace ham we use turkey ham which is halal and we use turkey rashers to replace bacon.

"There is still come scepticism from people when we tell them that we're 100 per cent halal, but once I explain the procedure we have gone through and the fact that there are no haram ingredients including pork available at the store, they feel assured."

He added: "When we decided to do this we decided to do it properly. Some of our competitors offer halal products but if your selling a halal meat sandwich and there’s a pork sandwich sat right next to it, it’s not halal anymore."

The store will be celebrating its first anniversary of going halal next month and to commemorate this, it's offering a 'buy one get one free offer' on its 6ins sub sandwiches.

To claim your offer just print out this page and take into the store.

  • Offer ends on 20 January and is only available at the Hollinwood store.

Protestors boycott halal subway

20/ 1/2009

PROTESTORS have launched an internet campaign asking people to boycott a sandwich retailer for only stocking Halal meat in two of its stores in Manchester.

Campaigners have set up a group on social networking website Facebook asking users to support them in pressurising the Subway restaurant chain to "offer all its customers the freedom to choose" whether they eat ritually prepared or traditionally prepared meat.

The stores, in Cheetham Hill and Levenshulme, stock only certified Halal meats, which are prepared for consumption according to Muslim religious practice.

"We believe this discriminates against non-Muslim customers," wrote one of the group's administrators. "Our intention is not to deprive the Muslim customers the right to Halal products, but we must be free to decide."

The group hope to encourage supporters to avoid buying Subway products, send a letter of concern to the company and also to sign their petition, which they intend to present to the company's chief executive.

A spokesman for Subway said: "The Subway chain has over 70 stores in the Manchester and Greater Manchester area, of which several serve a range of certified Halal meats.

"The Halal stores reflect an increased demand from the local Muslim community for Halal certified products.

"Subway stores aim to cater for the whole community, by offering subs that everyone can enjoy, and should customers wish to eat non-Halal meats at a Subway store in Manchester, there are many others to choose from."

Cheetham councillor Afzal Khan, a former lead member for race equality, said: "The company's decision to serve Halal meat in these two areas seems to me to be a commercial decision.

"If they have stopped providing non-Halal meat, then the management must have concluded that there are not many meat eaters who object to eating it.

"Through this policy they can make their business viable and more profitable. I would support any action which provides service to many diverse groups living in our vibrant city."

Bismihi Ta'aalaa
We have removed the paragraph from this Fatwa:
"Further, it is mentioned in Muslim Food Guide (1420/200 edition) that Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is also impermissible as it is generated from the fermentation of sugars from cane, forming the intoxicating element of all fermented liquors. (A-20) "
The reason for doing this is quite simple. The Fatwa posted relates to the jurisprudence of alcohol use in products for topical (external) use. This quote from the MFG refers to alcohols being impermissible for ingestion (consumption), when it is added to a product as an ingredient, regardless of the source of alcohol, whether it be sourced from sugars from cane or otherwise. The description is quite correct, but this Ruling does not apply to external use of alcohols. They are permissible, as long as they are not sourced from dates and grapes.
To conclude, such ethyl alcohols are permissible for topical use, hence the reason why this quote is being removed from this answer. Please note we are not in anyway suggesting that Mufti Yusuf Sacha has erred, but rather the quote in this answer was not applicable.
Where such alcohols are used for flavourings, they are permissible. For more details on our Fatwa on Alcoholic Flavourings, please see:
Mufti Abdullah Patel

Now, halal, Sikh and Hindu diet for UK troops in Afghanistan

London, Feb.6 (ANI): A new ration system for British troopers with 20 different menus, plus six new ones for vegetarians, aimed at meeting Halal, Sikh and Hindu dietary requirements, will place the usual fare of corned beef hash firmly into the history books and museums.

Bully beef, the cornerstone of the British Army for more than a century, is to be replaced by mushroom pasta and halal dishes. A new varied menu will be designed to counter the boiling temperatures of Helmand and a more multi-cultural military, reports The Telegraph.

While some hardened veterans may shed a tear at the passing of their beloved bully beef (apparently out-voted by their juniors) all will welcome the long overdue decision to throw out chocolate.

Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, troops have been bemused by the decision to continue packing their 24 hour ration packs with bars of chocolate that regularly melt and explode inside the pack's cardboard box leaving a sticky mess that coats other rations.

Instead the bland tasting chocolate has been replaced by goodies such as Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cake and energy bars.

British troops will now be able to boast Shrewsbury and Ginger biscuits, muesli and dried fruits when they swap food with American or Danish counterparts in Helmand.

Quentin Davies, the Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said: "One of the most important requirements is to provide increased variety to troops operating for long periods on rations, which will help reduce menu fatigue. These new menus have been developed to meet the needs of service personnel operating in the extreme climates of Afghanistan and Iraq, providing them with a wider range of nutritionally balanced meals." Halal-standard slaughtering doesn't need animals awake??

11:00 03 December 2006 by

"He has only forbidden you dead meat and blood, and the flesh of swine and that on which any other name has been invoked besides that of God." (The Koran, 2:173)

Muslim religious law requires, among other things, that an animal must be drained of blood before it is halal - permissible for consumption. Ritual slaughter according to Jewish dietary law - shechita - has the same prescription. Most Muslim slaughterers believe that drainage will only be complete if the throat of the animal is slit without stunning it first, but now Haluk Anil of the University of Bristol, UK, and colleagues have shown that the amount of blood drained from the animal, and the rate of blood loss, is the same regardless of whether or not it is stunned first.

Anil's team have already shown that stunning does not affect "bleed-out" in sheep. Now they have done the same thing in cattle. They measured the bleed-out in 13 cattle killed by the tradition Muslim method, and 13 killed in the same way, but having first been stunned by a captive-bolt-pistol blow to the head (Animal Welfare, vol 15, p 325).

"Stunning does not impede blood loss, therefore this objection cannot be used any more," says Anil, who is coordinating a European Union project to examine legislation and welfare issues related to religious slaughter, both shechita and halal.

Domino's Pizza in hot water over Halal

12th February 2009, 12:14pm

A branch of Domino's Pizza in Birmingham is telling customers they can not have pork on their pizza, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The mixed-race area of Hall Green is home to many people who can only eat Halal options.

One customer was told he couldn't have a 'Meteor' pizza which has pepperoni, sausage, meatballs, ground beef and smoky bacon.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "It's a disgrace, I can appreciate them having it as an option but to have it completely Halal is just not on. I'm all for racial and religious tolerance but if anything this is intolerant to my beliefs and discriminatory against me.

"Instead I had to travel two miles out of my way to another branch – I was appalled. Hall Green is a mixed race area and should therefore cater to its multicultural make-up. In a society that promotes racial and religious integration, this sort of things only isolates people."

A worker at the store added: "The store wasn't doing very well so we had to do something – we needed people who weren't getting Halal options to come to us. It's been like this for four weeks and business has picked up a little."

A spokesman for Domino's said: "In that particular area of Birmingham there are a large number of Muslims so there is naturally more of a demand for Halal based products. We appreciate we cannot please everybody but there are alternatives, such as turkey ham, and we have thought long and hard about this decision and we are sure it is the right one."

UK Farming Minister Kennedy launches animal slaughter consultation

UK FARMING Minister Jane Kennedy has launched a consultation on proposed new rules on the welfare of animals at slaughter. The rules follow an EU proposal and will see measures introduced for all animals including poultry to ensure animals are slaughtered by a method that leads to instant death or death after stunning. She also confirmed exemptions would be available for slaughter in accordance with religious rites, such as for Halal and Kosher meat.

Halal Meat in Solution for School in the UK

Dale Primary School in Derby, England is to have only Halal meat on the school menu for certain days of the week. The reason being, that if the meat being served on the day is not totally Halal, there could be cross contamination with non Halal meat, especially pork. As the majority of the 550 pupils at this school are Muslim they have opted out of the local council school meals system.

Kuwait 'Awash' With Fake Halal Meat

The swell in demand for halal products has given rise to fraud, where companies and exporters are labeling foods as halal, when, in fact, this is not the case. Up until recently, there was no centralized body defining the standards of halal and accrediting certification organizations. The International Halal Integrity Alliance (IHI) aims to counter halal deception and standardize regulations.

lead free kohl (kuhl)/surma??

Just recently, in my quest to find a halal eyeliner, I stumbled across some kohl brands which were banned in various countries due to their high lead content, however the same brands are currently still being sold in other countries such as the UK, and this is extremely worrying. There are many consumers who choose to wear kohl thinking it is natural product and therefore, is a halal product, yet unfortunately this very product is doing them much damage and they no little of it. Therefore when purchasing a certain brand of kohl, we must research into whether it is safe for human consumption.

THIS EMAIL/ARTICLE IS LABELLED AS PROBABLY BEING INACCURATE!!!!

By Dr. M. Amjad Khan (Supposedly)

In near
ly all the western countries including Europe, the PRIMARY choice for meat is PIG. There are a lot of farms in these countries to A breed this animal. In France alone, Pig Farms account for more than 42,000.

PIGS have the highest quantity of FAT in their body than any other animal. But Europeans and Americans try to avoid fats.

Thus, where does the FAT from these PIGS go? All pigs are cut
i
n slaughter houses under the control of the department of food and it was the headache of the department of food to dispose of the fat removed from these pigs.

Formally, it was burnt (about 60 years ago). Then they thought of utilizing it. First, they experimented it in the making of SOAPS and it worked.

Then, a full network was formed and this FAT was chemically Processed,Packed and Marketed, while the other manufacturing companies bought it. In the meantime, all European States made it a rule that every Food, Medical and Personal Hygiene product should have the ingredients listed on its cover. so, this ingredient was listed as PIG FAT.

Those who are living in Europe for the past 40 years know about this. But, these products came under a ban by the ISLAMIC COUNTRIES at that time, which resulted in a trade deficit.

Going back in time, if you are somehow related to South East Asia, you might know about the provoking factors of the 1857 CIVIL WAR. At that time, Rifle Bullets were made in Europe and transported to the sub-continent through the Sea.It took months to reach there and the gun powder in it was ruined due to the exposure to sea.

Then, they got the idea of coating the Bullets with fat, which was PIG FAT. The fat layer had to be scratched by teeth before using them.
When the word spread, the soldiers, mostly Muslim and some Vegetarians, refused to fight.Which eventually lead to the Civil War.

The Europeans recognized these facts, and instead of writing PIG FAT, they started writing ANIMAL FAT.All those living in Europe since 1970's know this fact. When the companies were asked by authorities from the MUSLIM COUNTRIES, what animal fat is it, they were told it was COW and SHEEP Fat. Here again a question raised, if it was COW or SHEEP Fat, still it is HARAM to MUSLIMS, as these animal were not SLAUGHTERED as per the ISLAMIC LAW. Thus, they were again banned.

Now, these multinational companies were again facing a severe drought of money as 75% of their income comes from selling their goods to Muslim Countries, and these earn BILLIONS OF DOLLARS of Profit from their exports to the MUSLIM WORLD.

Finally they decided to start a coding language, so that only their Departments of Food Administration should know what they are using, and the common man is left lurking in the dark. Thus, they started E-CODES. These

E-INGREDIENTS are present in a majority of products of
multinational firms including, but not limited to
-

TOOTH PASTE,
SHAVING CREAM
CHEWING GUM,
CHOCOLATE,
SWEETS,
BISCUITS,
CORN FLAKES, TOFFEES,
CANNED FOODS,
FRUIT TINS,

Some medication Multi-Vitamins Since these goods are being used in all MUSLIM Countries indiscriminately, our society is facing problems like shamelessness, rudeness and sexual promiscuity.

So, I request all MUSLIMS or non pork eaters to check the ingredients of the ITEMS of daily use and match it with the following list of E-CODES.
If any of the ingredients listed below is found, try to avoid it, as it has got PIG FAT ;

E100, E110, E120, E140, E141, E153, E210, E213, E214, E216, E234, E252, E270, E280, E325, E326, E327, E334, E335, E336, E337, E422, E430, E431, E432, E433, E434, E435, E436, E440, E470, E471, E472, E473, E474, E475, E476, E477, E478, E481, E482, E483, E491, E492, E493, E494, E495, E542,E570, E572, E631, E635, E904.

(Probably/possibly as commented by some reader(s) if anyone has researched all the ingredients and dont just say it is some food colour.. who told you what the source of the colour is??..)

All Vimto drinks are suitable for vegetarians. Additionally all Vimto branded confectionery with the exception of Vimto Bon Bons are also suitable for vegetarians.

Vimto does contain a very small amount of alcohol used as a carrier for the flavour.

Vimto does not contain any animal gelatine, animal fats or rennet. The flavourings used in soft drinks manufacture typically do contain alcohol however. This is used as the solvent to extract the flavouring substances from the fruits. Given the level of alcohol in the flavouring and the amount of flavouring used the level of alcohol therefore present in the final drink is extremely low.

We often receive enquiries of this nature in relation to Vimto’s suitability as Halaal. Strictly speaking, the drink is not Halaal however at least one soft drink manufacturer has presented a case to the Moslem council and had their products accepted for consumption despite containing the small amount of alcohol noted. We have not pursued this route ourselves but I have no reason to doubt that our products would receive the same acceptance.

Again thank you for taking the trouble to write to us. We very much appreciate hearing from Vimto consumers.

Kind regards

The Vimto Team

Kellogs Halal or Haram?

Thank you for your email regarding Kelloggs cereals. I can confirm the email received from Ana Lara is in fact correct. Gelatin was found necessary to achieve the required product image and
profile for the market place. As soon as we can achieve an alternative ingredient to gelatin whilst maintaining the quality expected from Kelloggs we will reformulate as appropriate. Thank you for contacting us

Kind Regards
Lindsay James
Customer Services Representative

Subject: Gelatine (pork / beef) In Kellogg's products

Thank you for contacting Kellogg Company about the gelatin we add to some of our products. We are happy to provide you with this information.

Gelatin is used to help the texture of the product and is derived from either beef or pork. Kellogg's(R) Frosted Mini-Wheats( R) and Kellogg's(R) Rice Krispies Treats(R) cereals contain type B gelatin, which is derived from beef. Whenever marshmallow ingredients are present in a
Kellogg's(R) cereal brand, the marshmallow contains type A gelatin, which is derived from pork. Kellogg's(R) Krave(TM) Snack Bars also contain type A gelatin derived from pork sources.

Type B gelatin is derived from beef sources and is found in the frosting of all varieties of Kellogg's(R) Frosted Pop-Tarts(R) , Kellogg's(R) Frosted Pop-Tarts(R) Snak-Stix(TM) , all varieties of Kellogg's(R) Pop-Tarts(R) Pastry Swirls, and Kellogg's(R) Nutri-Grain( R) Minis with
Yogurt Icing. Plain (unfrosted) Kellogg's(R) Pop-Tarts(R) do not contain gelatin. None of the equipment that comes in contact with the gelatin in Kellogg's(R) Frosted Pop-Tarts(R) is used in the production of the other pastries.

Kellogg's(R) Rice Krispies Treats(R) Squares contain type A gelatin in the marshmallow, which is derived from pork sources.

The pregelatinized wheat starch contained in some of our toaster pastries is derived from wheat and does not contain any gelatin. Vegetable shortening only is used to produce plain or frosted
Kellogg's(R) Pop-Tarts(R) . No animal shortening is used.

We appreciate your patronage of our products and hope that this provides you with the information you need to make food choices appropriate for your family.

Sincerely,

Ana Lara Consumer Affairs Department

Company Statement about alcohol flavourings:

" Please note that some flavourings (an ingredient in Chewits) do contain alcohol as a carrier/solvent. However flavouring is only a small percentage of the recipe and
due to the temperature of the product when flavour is added, the alcohol will 'flash off' thus leaving the product alcohol free."

They have not told us which products contain the alcohol flavouring, so we cannnot advise any further you in that respect, if you wish to refrain. However, our ruling is below.

Alcoholic Flavourings Clarification:
Alcohols used as a carrier for food colourings and flavourings are permissible as long as they are not sourced from dates or grapes.

Rubicon Halal or Rubicon Haram? - update

This serves as an update to the previous Rubicon post..

There is a text and Email going around to the tune of:

Rubicon contains 0.055% of alcohol as confirmed on their website
www.rubiconexotic.com/faqs2.html. Thats nearly 20ml of alcohol in a
standard 330ml can! The managment confirm it is not halal. plz fwd.

Answer

Last Updated: 28/01/2009

In the Name of Allah, the Inspirer of Truth.
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

In answer to the text, the alcohol remaining in some products would be less than 0.05%. The calculation of 20ml in every 330ml is obviously as a result of incorrect mathematical calculations.

0.05% of 330ML is actually 0.165ml (approximately one sixth of a millilitre) which is a negligible amount.

For our take on alcohol flavourings, see:

Alcohol Flavourings Clarification -
http://www.gmwa.org.uk/foodguide2/index.php?page=viewquestion&id=200

We try to give the consumer the choice, if they feel they want to refrain from alcoholic flavourings.

As a result of the text and the resultant queries, Rubicon swiftly provided us with the information we required to make a decision on their products, so based on the information provided, a fully comprehensive list is presented below.

It is crucial for companies to work with closely with us, so decisions on products suitable for Muslims are decided on sound Jurisprudential principles. Where companies do not do this, they sometimes get themselves into a pickle.

Coca cola halal? does not contain animal ingredients?

Last Updated: 01/02/2009

Coca Cola Statement:
"
None of the products of Coca-Cola Great Britain contain ingredients derived from mammals. As some practicing vegetarians avoid fish products as well, it is important to note that some of our products contain minute traces of fish gelatine, which is used as a stabiliser for the beta-carotene colour. These products have been clearly labelled on the attached list.

Soft drinks products of The Coca-Cola Company are officially recognised as non-alcoholic beverages. However, 'Schweppes' Lemonade Shandy is an alcohol containing beverage and thus is appropriately labelled. The ingredients and manufacturing process used in the production of 'Coca-Cola' are rigorously regulated by government and health authorities in more than 200 countries which have consistently recognised the beverage as a non-alocoholic product. This includes countries where Islam is the major religion."
‘Schweppes’ Lemonade Shandy - Alcoholic drink HARAAM
The rest are Halaal according to information provided, however please note that Coca Cola has not responded to our question about alcoholic flavourings. Britvic, Rubicon and Libby's drinks have clearly declared alcoholic flavourings.
If you wish to refrain from alcoholic flavourings, then we advise you that Coca Cola Company products may not be suitable for your consumption.

so much for... "Brother im muslim.. what you mean where i get my meat from??"

Study reveals 'shocking' kebabs

Meat sliced off a rotating slab in a Glasgow takeaway
Some 35% of doners contained a different meat than advertised

Doner kebabs sold in the UK contain "shocking" levels of salt, fat and calories, a survey has concluded.

Officers from 76 councils sampled 494 kebabs to test their nutritional value, during the Local Authority Coordinators of Regulatory Services (Lacors) study.

The average doner they tested contained almost 1,000 calories - half a woman's recommended daily intake.

Geoffrey Theobald, of Lacors, said: "The level of saturated fat and salt in some is a serious cause for concern."

He added that while they "would never consider kebabs part of a calorie-controlled diet" the true content of the average kebab was worrying.

Among the kebabs sampled - without salad or sauces - the average doner contained 98% of an adult's recommended daily salt and 148% of their daily saturated fat allowance.

Under the supermarket "traffic lights" system, red marks would be earned by 97% for fat, 98% for saturated fat and 96% for salt.

Some 35% of labels listed a different meat species than that actually found in the kebab.

This study has turned the spotlight on doner kebabs
Geoffrey Theobald
Lacors

Six kebabs were found to include pork when it had not been declared as an ingredient. Two of the six were described as Halal - food or drink permitted for Muslims, which must not contain pork.

Mr Theobald said it was "totally unacceptable" that people with certain faiths were unknowingly eating meats that were against their beliefs.

The worst doners inspectors came across contained 1,990 calories before salad and sauces - over 95% of a woman's recommended daily calories, 346% of a woman's saturated fat intake and 277% of an adult's daily salt intake.

Researchers uncovered significant regional variations, with the average kebab in the north-west of England containing 1,101 calories, compared with 1,084 in Scotland, 1,055 in Wales and 1,066 in England's south-east.

Northern Ireland's average of 843 was the lowest in the UK.

Mr Theobald said it was "totally unacceptable" that inaccurate labelling was so widespread.

In addition, there was little difference in weight between kebabs labelled as "small" and "large", he added.

"While some people may think they are making sensible choices by ordering a small kebab, this study showed little difference between small and large kebab weight."

He said with obesity rates rising so rapidly in the UK, portion size was as important as content, he said.

"This study has turned the spotlight on doner kebabs and we hope that manufacturers rise to the challenge and work with councils to provide a healthier product that contains only what it says on the label," Mr Theobald said.

Research by the UK's Food Standards Agency in 2006 found that 18.5% of doner takeaways posed a "significant" threat to public health, and 0.8% posed an "imminent" threat.

Are You Wearing Pigskin Leathers?

It is amazing that many Muslims do not know if they are actually wearing a leather jacket or a shoe or carrying a purse or any other leather product that is made of pigskin.

Imagine how many mosques, centers and other holy places they may have made NAJAS. Their prayers may not have been accepted. Do you think you are one of them or will you be one on them?

Here are some tips to find what a pigskin is, what it looks like and where it is used?

Where it is Used?

  • General Leather Products: Heavily used in Chinese and other developing or under- developing countries.
  • Shoes & Joggers: Full Leather suede looking Shoes or inner linings.
  • Jackets: Full Leather suede looking knee long and waist long full sleeve or sleeveless jackets.
  • Purses: Women and men purses. Full leather or linings.
  • Brief Cases: Men and Women leather brief cases, usually inner linings are pigskins. But look out for rest of the leather.

Why is it Used?

Price & Availability: Pigskin is cheap and easily available in most countries. It is lighter that real suede made of Cow. Due to low price it is easier to market and sell. It was first used as liners as it is really thin and strong. Soon it was used in most products as profit margins are comparatively high.

How to recognized it?

Mostly, it looks like suede. But it is thinner. It has spots on it. Kind of depressions or little holes that never go through. It seems like some has used spikes to try to pin through it. But these spots are only on one side.

Usually, on the other side of the leather, you will see squeezed round shaped spots. These spots may not be very prominent on this side. If you look very closely at the pictures given, you will have no problem in identifying pigskin. If you are not sure, read labels or ask the store keepers. Do not ask them if these are pigskins. Let them tell you what kind of leather it is. Do not take their words. Ask for proof.

Hard to Recognize

Hardest is to recognize the pigskin that is being used for non-suede type leather products. But with a close examination spots and holes can be detected. This type of leather needs much concentration.

Rubicon Drinks Halal or not??

Are Rubicon Exotic Juice Drinks suitable for Halal consumption?

Questions about soft drinks containing ethyl alcohol have been raised a number of times by concerned Muslims over the past few years. In these cases the Muslim Law (Shariah) Council in the UK have confirmed that the composition and procedure involved in the production of these soft drinks is in compliance with the rules of Shariah and therefore Halal for Muslims to consume.

If you were to analyse soft drinks you would find a tiny trace amount of ethyl alcohol in many of the finished products. The reason this is common in soft drinks is because the flavouring process often results in a trace of ethyl alcohol. This amount is typically less than 0.05% - a level that is so low that the body metabolises the ethyl alcohol faster than it is consumed meaning it can have no intoxicating effect. Some Rubicon products do contain trace levels below this 0.05% level.

AG Barr the soft drinks company who have made Rubicon products for the past 25 years have accreditation from the Muslim Law (Shariah) Council UK that testifies that its drinks are in compliance with the rules of Shariah and therefore are Halal for Muslims to consume.

Rubicon only makes soft drinks and these have been enjoyed by the people of Britain and around the world for over 25 years.

We hope this answers your questions and allays your concerns about the suitability of Rubicon to be consumed by Muslims. If you have any further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@rubiconexotic.com.

The above quoted words are taken directly from Rubicons Faq on it official website.. now it does have "trace" amount of alcohol in it... Halal or not?? you need to question an Alim who is well versed with the Fiqh of food items and is a pious (muttaqi) person.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR A MUSLIM TO STRICTLY CONSUME HALAL?

Consuming Halal is an order of Allah and an essential part of the Islamic faith. Allah has repeatedly emphasised the consumption of Halal in His book. The following are some examples of such verses:

  • “O Messengers, eat from the pure foods and work righteousness”
    (Holy Quran 23:51)
  • “O you who have believed, eat from the pure things which we have provided you” (Holy Quran 2:172)
  • “O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth (that is) lawful and pure”
    (Holy Quran 2:168)
  • “So eat of that (meat) upon which Allah's name has been mentioned, if you are believers in His verses” (Holy Quran 6:118)
  • “And do not eat that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, for indeed it is a grave disobedience”. (Holy Quran 6:121)

By being careless about the dietary laws of Islam a believer puts himself in harms way both in this world and the world hereafter. In this world, due to in taking such a product he deprives himself from having any of his good deeds and duas accepted by his creator while in the hereafter he suffers the greatest loss ever imaginable i.e. refusal from being admitted to Paradise . All this is confirmed in the following traditions:

  1. Abu Hurairah RA related,” Allah's Messenger PBUH said: Verily Allah is pure and He accepts only what is pure and indeed Allah has given those orders to the believers, which he has given to the Messengers. He has said, “O Messenger, eat from the pure foods and work righteous”. He -also- has said: “O you who have believed, eat from the pure things which we have provided you.” Then (the Prophet PBUH) made mention of a man who undergoes a lengthy journey in a state that he is dishevelled and dusty. He spreads his hands towards the sky (calling), “O my lord, O my lord”, however his food is Haram, his drink is Haram, his clothes are Haram and he has been nourished with Haram! So how will his call be answered?” (Muslim)
  2. S'ad RA relates: Allah's messenger PBUH said “O S'ad purify your food (and as a result) you will become one who's supplications are accepted. I swear by He in whose hands the soul of Muhammad PBUH lies, verily a servant (of Allah) tosses a Haram morsel in his stomach (due to which) no deed is accepted from him for 40 days” (Tabarani)
  3. Abu Baker RA narrated that Allah's Messenger PBUH said “That body will not enter Paradise which has been nourished with Haram” (Baihaqi)
  4. Ka`b Ibn Ujrah relates that the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said, “a body nourished with Haram will not enter Jannah”. (Tirmidhi)
  5. Jabir RA reported, Allah's Messenger PBUH said, “That flesh will not enter Paradise which has grown from Haram, and all that flesh which has grown from Haram, the fire (of hell) is more worthy of it.” (Ahmed, Darimi, Baihaqi)
  6. Abu Hurayrah (RA) reports that the Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said, “a time will come upon the people wherein a man will not bother what he intakes; whether from Halal source or Haram.” (Bukhari)

In our times, it becomes even more important to ensure the meat and poultry consumed is genuinely Halal due to the execessive deceit, cheat and false labelling of Halal in the industry.

THE FIQH OF HALAL MEAT

Based on a verbal Fatwa by Mufti Rafi Usmani
Raised by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

What are some general principles related to Halal meat? Can we trust others' word on whether the meat is Halal?

Answer

  1. In general, the jurists (fuqaha) mention that one can trust another’s word (Muslim or non-Muslim) that the meat has been properly Islamically slaughtered [Fatawa Hindiyya, Radd al-Muhtar].
  2. However, when there is reason to be cautious, it is recommended to take the means to make sure that it is in fact Halal.
  3. When there is ‘reasonable’ fear that this particular meat is possibly Haram--or when it is generally the case that meat labelled ‘Halal’ is dubious--then it would be one’s duty to make sure.

    (End of Fatwa)

Keeping the above in mind, Muslims living in this country need to ponder as to which situation relates to them. The first and second situations are both out of the question, and the reason is obvious. The third situation also does not relate to us, since there is not only ‘reasonable’ fear that the meat labelled as Halal is possibly Haram. Rather, based on the research and investigation of many individuals and organisations, the current situation is even worse – that is there is ‘extreme’ fear that a particular meat labelled as Halal may be Haram.

Therefore, one must not take another’s word at face value; rather it will be one’s duty to ensure that the meat is Halal, whether individually or through an organisation that one trusts and who would give this assurance.

And Allah knows best

Mufti Muhammad Ibn Adam Al-Kawthari

CONTEMPORARY ISSUE OF STUNNING

The issue of stunning is very delicate (whether done by captive bolt stun, electric head stun or electrified water bath), in the sense that there are many conditions and criteria that must be considered. Firstly for reason of the animals' welfare, the act of stunning is extremely disliked and according to some even reaches the stage of being Haram, as it causes the animal unnecessary suffering. Thereafter even more importantly is how it affects the Islamic ruling on the animal as to whether or not it is fit for Muslim consumption.

The Islamic criteria that must be met while slaughtering the animals are clear-cut; any deviation from them will render the animal unfit for Muslim consumption. Amongst the guidelines established for a Halal slaughter is the unwavering fundamental that the animal must be alive at the time of slaughter and the blood must be drained out.

It has been witnessed that on many occasions animals subjected to stunning arrive at the slaughterer dead. This is due to either the unbearably high voltage or a delay in the time it takes to get to the slaughterer if the stunning is irreversible. Sometimes it can also be because animals are drowned in the stunning tank. It has been noted that the problem of dead animals reaching the slaughterer is invariably present in all the slaughterhouses that use the stunning method. The research also states that more than 35% of the animal especially chickens die prior to slaughter due to stunning. It is also proven that a large amount of blood remains in the animal which renders it Haram. The animal is also deprived of the effects of tasmiyyah as it would be unconscious at the time of slaughter.

Also what needs to be understood is that there is no pressure from the side of the government of the United Kingdom forcing Muslims to adopt such inhumane methods of slaughter. Therefore because of all the negative aspects of stunning, the Halal Monitoring Committee has set a blanket ruling disallowing stunning in any form.

“Stunning the animal before slaughter leaves a huge doubt into the halalness of the animal as many could be killed by the stunning especially in the case of poultry. Furthermore, it prevents the drainage of entire blood resulting in it being retained in the animal and retained blood causes germs and bacteria, it deprives animals from the benefits of tasmiyah due to it being unconscious, it is inhumane to animals and causes unnecessary pain and suffering, it is in reality done not for animal rights purposes, but in order for the industry to kill more animals quicker so as to increase profits. According to the majority of the Ulama stunning is not accepted in Islam and stunning could render the meat Haram in many cases.” (Abu Ibrahim)

Quick Facts on Stunning

  • F.A.W.C. reports more than 1/3 chickens die prior to slaughter and are labelled Halal.
  • Stunning prevents the drainage of entire blood resulting in it being retained.
  • Retained blood causes germs and bacteria.
  • Stunning deprives animals from the benefits of tasmiyah (religious blessing) due to being unconscious.
  • Stunning is inhumane to animals and causes unnecessary suffering.
  • The British Law allows the Muslim to carry out religious slaughter without stunning
